Moments That Defined Fashion In 2016

Jun 19, 2017    Rich Summer: Environment In Fashion

From the boundary-breaking Kenzo World fragrance ad to Alicia Keys's decision to go make-up free - not forgetting the return of the Pob and the time Kim Kardashian said she was "over" contouring - 2016 has been a busy year for beauty. Look back at the most memorable moments here.

When fashion's bright young things bagged the big beauty contracts Lily-Rose Depp for Chanel, Bella Hadid for Dior and Cara Delevingne for Rimmel - fashion's favourite girls bagged the biggest beauty contracts of the year, meaning that we saw even more of their pretty faces than ever before. Hadid's partnership proved a particularly modern one, seeing her star in a series of online beauty films for the brand rather than a traditional campaign.

When Kim Kardashian declared herself "over" contouring

Kim Kardashian-West is arguably the name most synonymous with contouring, but at this year's Vogue Festival she declared herself "over" it. "I think right now it's more about nontouring, like real skin with less make-up on it. I'm trying to wear less... and my husband loves me without make-up," she told the packed auditorium. And (to some extent) she's stuck to her word - even going make-up free at the Balenciaga spring/summer 2017 show during Paris Fashion Week.

When Theresa May made red nail polish her beauty signature

All eyes have been on Theresa May since she became prime minister of the United Kingdom in July, and one thing that the beadiest of those eyes will have noticed is her predilection for red nail polish. Whether she's speaking at a global conference, stepping out of 10 Downing Street or on Christmas Day (we predict, anyway), short tomato-red nails are this political leader's manicure of choice.

When Taylor Swift bleached her hair

Spawning a host of copycat styles, Taylor Swift made headlines in April when she swapped her famous honey-toned hair for a striking platinum blonde. The first time she stepped out with her new hue was at Coachella, where she posted a picture with the caption "BLEACHELLA". Girl-next-door image? Firmly shaken off.

When Victoria Beckham collaborated with Estée Lauder

With the sheer volume of beauty collaborations that take place every year, it's easy to lose track. One that wasn't about to pass anyone by, though, was Victoria Beckham's make-up collection for Estée Lauder, which brought together beautiful neutral tones with bold flashes of peacock blue and orange-red. The most coveted product? Arguably the Morning Aura luminiser, designed to give the illusion of Beckham-esque cheekbones. Read the Vogue review here.
